The Kissing Hand was published in 1993. It was not widely distributed, but thanks to kindergarten teachers, it became a grass roots phenomenon, hit the NY Times bestseller list in 1997, #1 in 1999, and has been a big bestseller at back-to-school time ever since. It also sells well at Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Mother's Day. It has sold over 1.2 million copies in bookstores, and 3.4 million copies through Scholastic book fairs and book clubs. It is one of Scholastic's bestsellers every year. In 2004, a sequel to the Kissing Hand was published - A Pocket Full of Kisses--which deals with sibling rivalry.
The book has been adopted by the National Hospice Association, and is also used in many hospitals, camps, preschools, and daycare facilities for children, for many different occasions in which parents and children must be apart, or even as a morning ritual when moms have to leave for work. The most recent application we've heard of is college kids being given a copy by their parents when they move into their college dorm.
